Shropshire 3 peaks challenge

Published on Monday June 21st, 2021

Up for a challenge?

Pull on your hiking boots – tackle three mighty peaks in Shropshire.

Shropshire’s hills are legendary. From the majestic Wrekin to the twin summits of the Clees, our county is covered with tumbling terrain that’s ripe for walking.

Climbing one is rewarding enough. You’ll see why when you reach the summit – they just don’t do views like this anywhere else. Our advice: take a lungful of crisp Shropshire air and let it all sink in. Bliss.

Now imagine that feeling three times. That’s the beauty of the Shropshire 3 Peaks Challenge: not only does it give your legs a workout, but it also lets you see Shropshire from three of its most extraordinary lookout spots.

You’ll find the routes and tips you need right here. Take it slow and steady or hike up a storm. Either way, don’t forget to stop for lunch at one of the traditional pubs or cafes en route. Happy hiking!

1. The Stiperstones

Starting at the base of the hill, this 5.2-mile circular walk will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Make sure to stop at the many viewpoints along the route to enjoy some of the best views in the county.

The Bog Visitor Centre is located nearby for refreshments and a toilet break. The Visitor Centre also provides displays on the history of the area and its folklore.

Church Stretton, known as Shropshire’s walking town, is a short 30-minute drive away. There are a variety of pubs nearby where you can stop for a well-deserved post-walk lunch.

2. Black Hill, Clun

Starting from Clun Castle car park, this 4.6-mile circular route will take you approximately 2.5 hours to complete. It might take slightly longer if you have little legs joining you.

Enjoy the incredible woodlands filled with wildlife and be treated to extraordinary views of Shropshire and the valley of the River Clun. Be sure to stop off at Clun Castle, too. This once-mighty fort played a key role in protecting the area from Welsh invasion.

There are a variety of pubs and cafes in Clun where you can refuel after your walk. Alternatively, take the 10-minute drive to Bishop’s Castle to explore the town’s quirky shops and streets.

3. Brown Clee Hill

Starting at the car park, this circular walk is 5.2 miles long and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. You’ll be conquering Shropshire’s highest peak, at 540 metres in elevation.

Several Iron Age hill forts are dotted around Brown Clee Hill and its sister hill, Titterstone Clee. When on Clee’s Abdon Burf summit, look southwest and you’ll see Nordy Bank, the last intact survivor of the hill forts. Just make sure your camera is ready when you reach the summit – the views are outstanding.

Brown Clee Hill is sandwiched between the towns of Ludlow and Bridgnorth, so you’ll have a vast array of dining options after your trek.
